DECAF COFFEE: IS IT WORTH IT?

Decaf office coffee machine New Zealand

Decaf has a bit of an image problem. For years it was the coffee you ordered when you'd given up on the good stuff - watery, flavourless, and a little bit apologetic. But decaf has come a long way, and in an office setting it's quietly one of the most useful things you can offer. Someone on your team is pregnant, someone else can't handle caffeine after lunch, and plenty of people just want a cup in the afternoon without lying awake at night. Good decaf means everyone gets to join in.

So is it worth having in the office, and how is it actually made? Here's the rundown.

WHAT DECAF ACTUALLY IS

Decaffeinated coffee is normal coffee that's had most of its caffeine removed before roasting. The important word there is most - decaf isn't completely caffeine-free. A typical cup has only a small fraction of the caffeine of a regular coffee, which is more than enough for someone avoiding it, while still not being literally zero. For the vast majority of people cutting back, that's exactly what they're after.

The beans start life the same as any other. The caffeine is stripped out while they're still green, and only then are they roasted, ground and brewed like normal. That's why good decaf can taste almost indistinguishable from the real thing - it is the real thing, just with the caffeine taken out first.

HOW IS DECAF MADE?

Decaffeination happens at the green bean stage, before any roasting takes place. The unroasted beans are soaked or steamed to open them up, the caffeine is drawn out, and the beans are then dried, ready to be roasted like any other coffee. There are a few different ways the caffeine itself is removed - some methods use water, others use a solvent or pressurised carbon dioxide - but the end result is the same: a green bean with the caffeine taken out, still carrying the flavour compounds that make good coffee taste like coffee.

That last point is the important one. Modern decaf tastes so much better than the stuff people remember because the process has got much better at removing the caffeine while leaving the flavour behind. Once the beans are decaffeinated, everything that happens next - the roast, the grind, the brew - is exactly the same as regular coffee, which is why a well-roasted decaf can be genuinely hard to tell apart from the real thing. In that sense it's just another bean to choose from, and the same things that make any office coffee good apply here too, as we cover in our guide to coffee beans for your office.

IS DECAF WORTH IT?

For an individual, decaf lets you enjoy the ritual and the taste of coffee without the caffeine - the afternoon flat white that won't wreck your sleep, or a cup during pregnancy when you're keeping caffeine down. It still carries many of the same antioxidants and much of the character of regular coffee, so you're not missing out on the experience, just the buzz.

For an office, it's about being genuinely inclusive. Coffee is one of the small things that brings a team together during the day, and having a decaf option means nobody's left out of that - whether it's for health reasons, sensitivity, or simply personal preference. The easiest way to offer both is a machine with two bean hoppers: our Kalerm Y-Series, for example, holds regular beans in one hopper and decaf in the other, so anyone can choose either at the push of a button without swapping beans in and out. Offering the choice doesn't have to mean two setups or extra fuss. It's a small touch that says you've thought about everyone.

GETTING DECAF RIGHT IN YOUR OFFICE

The key to good office decaf is the same as good office coffee generally: fresh, quality beans and a machine that treats them properly. Stale, cheap decaf is where the bad reputation comes from - fresh, well-made decaf is a completely different experience. Our decaf is roasted fresh in-house, the same as the rest of our range, rather than sitting on a shelf losing its flavour, so it holds up as a proper everyday option and not just an afterthought. You'll find it in our range of coffee beans and consumables, and if you'd like to offer your team the choice, we can point you toward the right beans and a setup that serves both without any fuss.
