The machine gets all the attention, but the beans are what actually make or break your office coffee. You could have the best machine on the market and still end up with average coffee if the beans aren't up to scratch.
For office managers and procurement teams, choosing beans might feel like guesswork. But it doesn't need to be. Here's what actually matters when selecting coffee beans for your workplace.
Arabica vs Robusta - Why It Matters
There are two main species of coffee bean: arabica and robusta. For most offices, arabica is the better choice. Here's why.
Arabica beans are smoother, sweeter, and more complex in flavour. They have about half the caffeine of robusta, which means less bitterness. They make up around 60-70% of global coffee production and are what you'll find in any decent NZ cafe.
Robusta beans are cheaper, stronger, and more bitter. They're commonly used in instant coffee and budget blends. If your office has ever had that harsh, burnt-tasting coffee that nobody enjoys, it was probably a robusta or a low-grade blend.
All of our Sorrento Coffee blends are 100% arabica. It costs more, but the difference in taste is noticeable from the first cup - and it's what Kiwi coffee drinkers expect.
Understanding Roast Levels
Roast level affects both the flavour and strength of your coffee. There's no "right" answer - it depends on what your team enjoys.
Light roast: More acidic, brighter, and you can taste the origin characteristics of the bean more clearly. Lighter body. Not as common in NZ offices but popular with specialty coffee drinkers.
Medium roast: The sweet spot for most workplaces. Balanced flavour, smooth body, and enough strength to cut through milk for flat whites and lattes. This is where our Sorrento range sits - all four blends are medium roasted for broad appeal.
Dark roast: Bolder, more intense, with smoky or chocolatey notes. Less acidity. Good for people who like a strong, punchy coffee. Our Premium blend leans closest to this end of the spectrum if your team prefers something with more bite.
For an office with mixed preferences, a medium roast is usually the safest bet - it works well as an espresso, long black, or with milk.
Our Sorrento Coffee Range
We offer four core blends, all 100% arabica and medium roasted for broad appeal. Every blend is roasted fresh in Auckland weekly using green beans sourced from John Burton, one of New Zealand's largest coffee importers. That freshness makes a real difference - pre-roasted beans sitting in a warehouse for months simply can't compete.
Brazilian - Origins: Brazil, Papua New Guinea. Smooth and medium body with sweet, chocolate, nutty, and herbal notes. Our most approachable blend and a solid all-rounder for offices where people drink a mix of black and milk coffees.
Blue Mountain - Origins: Brazil, Papua New Guinea, Kenya. Smooth and balanced with chocolate, nutty, orange, and cherry notes. A step up in complexity - great for teams that appreciate a bit more character in their cup.
Colombian - Origins: Colombia, Honduras. Smooth and round with caramel, cherry, chocolate, and honey notes. Our most popular blend, and the base for our decaf and fair trade organic options. It's a crowd-pleaser that works beautifully as a flat white.
Premium - Origins: Ethiopia, Colombia. Full-bodied with caramel, chocolate, citrus, and floral notes. Our darkest and strongest roast for those who like a bit more bite. A good option if your office has a few serious coffee drinkers who want something bolder.
Decaf - Based on our Colombian blend, so you get the same smooth flavour without the caffeine. Good to have on hand for staff who want a coffee later in the day without the buzz.
Fair Trade Organic - Also based on our Colombian blend, certified fair trade and organic. A growing choice for workplaces that value ethical sourcing.
Freshness Is Everything
Research suggests coffee beans lose up to 60% of their aroma within 15 minutes of being ground. But freshness starts well before the grind - it starts with the roast. Beans that were roasted weeks or months ago will taste flat and stale no matter how good the machine is.
Our beans are roasted fresh every week in Auckland and dispatched same-day on orders placed by 2pm. That means the beans in your machine are always days old, not months. It's one of the simplest ways to get noticeably better coffee in your office without changing anything else.
Which Beans Work Best in Office Machines?
Not all beans suit all machines. A few things to consider:
Oily beans can clog grinders. Very dark, oily roasts can gum up the internal grinder on automatic bean-to-cup machines. Medium roasts are generally safer and require less frequent grinder cleaning.
Consistency matters. Office machines work best with beans that have a consistent size and roast level. Our blends are specifically designed for automatic machines, so you get a reliable result every time.
Bean-to-cup machines only. These blends are whole beans designed for machines with a built-in grinder. If your machine uses pre-ground coffee or pods, they won't work - but if you're still on pods, it might be time to consider upgrading to a bean-to-cup setup.
How to Choose for Your Office
If you're not sure which blend to start with, our Colombian is the safest bet - it's our most popular for a reason. It's smooth enough for people who take milk and interesting enough for long black drinkers.
All of our beans are available as part of a free on loan or rental arrangement, and you can switch between blends anytime. Most offices try a couple before they settle on their favourite.
